Horizon Organic Milk and Half & Half
Ultra-pasteurized milk, also known as ultra-high-temperature (UHT), is heated at a high temperature for a short length of time ensuring an extended refrigerated shelf-life of 50 days, unopened. With the exception of the UHT designation on the front gable top, the ultra-pasteurized milk cartons will look the same as Horizon's other colorful, easy-to-spot cartons that carry the familiar Happy Cow logo. Best of all, there is no difference in the delicious taste of Horizon Organic milk so many consumers have come to favor.
Homogenization breaks up and disperses the milkfat throughout the milk, resulting in a smooth, uniform texture. Horizon Organic fluid milk, half & half and heavy cream are homogenized, as is the milk used to make other Horizon Organic dairy products, such as cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese and sour cream.
Fortification involves the addition of one or more vitamins, protein or minerals. In accordance with Food and Drug Administration regulations, vitamins A & D are added to Horizon Organic fat free, reduced fat and lowfat milk. Since enough vitamin A is naturally present in whole milk, we fortify Horizon Organic whole milk with vitamin D only. Vitamin D is added to 98% of all fluid milk marketed in the U.S.
