Apple's iBeacon is a low-energy Bluetooth connection that determines a smart phone's precise location and then messages about nearby items on sale. In addition, it can enable payments at the point-of-sale so customers don't need their wallets.
For example, if a grocery store places an iBeacon in the deli department, they can send a message offering a free pound of potato salad with purchase of salami so when a shopper walks past the deli, they receive the message to their phone.
