SUPERVALU Achieves Energy Star Rating In Over 100 Of Its Corporate Retail Stores

MINNEAPOLIS- SUPERVALU announced today that more than 100 of its corporate retail grocery stores have earned the ENERGY STAR(R) designation from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for efficient energy management.

"SUPERVALU is extremely proud of our energy conservation efforts throughout 2004," said Dan Bertocchini, SUPERVALU's corporate director of energy management. "We have set some aggressive goals for the upcoming year, and continue to make great progress in reducing energy use in our stores. The Energy Star designation is public recognition of our success, and underscores our commitment to the communities we serve and our environmental leadership."

SUPERVALU ranks in the top 21 percent of the grocery industry in terms of efficient energy management, reflecting the company's long-held focus on energy efficiency in the design and operation of its retail stores. These stores operate with a combined annual energy reduction of approximately 339 million kBtu, which equates to an environmental carbon dioxide emission reduction of more than 54,000 metric tons. This decrease in emissions has the same environmental green house gas impact as removing 11,827 cars from the road for one year, or providing 7,014 American households their electricity use for the same period.

SUPERVALU continues to focus on energy efficiency through an ongoing series of energy-related initiatives, with a goal to further reduce electrical energy usage by an additional 418 million kBtu's annually for its retail stores.

In addition to managing the energy usage of its more than 1,500 retail stores, 24 distribution centers and corporate offices, SUPERVALU also offers its energy-management best practices to more than 4,500 independent supermarkets and retail customers nationwide.
